Thermal Grizzly launches PhaseSheet PTM Pro: Improved conductivity and easier installation
Thermal Grizzly has announced the PhaseSheet PTM Pro, an upgraded version of its phase-change thermal pad technology. The manufacturer claims the new iteration offers enhanced thermal conductivity and a redesigned carrier film specifically engineered to make installation more straightforward and reduce the risk of tearing the material during application.
While the core technology remains consistent with the original PhaseSheet PTM, the 'Pro' designation highlights improvements in both usability and performance. The primary physical change lies in the carrier film; according to Thermal Grizzly, the new design allows the film to peel away more easily from both sides. This addresses a common pain point for enthusiasts, as the original sheets could be difficult to handle and prone to tearing during the delicate installation process.
How Phase-Change Materials Work
The PhaseSheet PTM Pro utilizes a material that undergoes a physical state change depending on the operating temperature. At room temperature, the sheet remains a solid, much like a standard thermal pad. However, once temperatures exceed 45°C, the material transitions into a very low-viscosity liquid, behaving similarly to traditional thermal paste.
This transition is designed to mitigate the 'pump-out effect'—a phenomenon where traditional thermal pastes are gradually pushed out from between the heatsink and the CPU or GPU die due to repeated thermal expansion and contraction. By transitioning into a liquid state under heat and settling into the microscopic imperfections of the surfaces, the PTM aims to maintain better coverage and long-term cooling performance than standard pastes.

Performance Claims and Pricing
Thermal Grizzly has released performance data suggesting the Pro version outperforms several high-end competitors in controlled environments. In a test utilizing a 30 x 30mm contact area, 300N of mounting force (48 PSI), and a 240W heat load, the PhaseSheet PTM Pro recorded a temperature difference of 5.83°C. This result was lower than the tested values for KryoSheet (6.13°C), Duronaut Pro (6.29°C), and the original PhaseSheet PTM (6.36°C).
The material remains electrically non-conductive and reusable, making it suitable for components without an Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS), such as mobile CPUs, GPUs, and memory modules. However, the price increase is significant: the PhaseSheet PTM Pro is available for $23.28 per 40 x 40mm sheet, compared to the original PhaseSheet PTM which cost $13.92 for a larger 50 x 40mm sheet.
