Surface Laptop Ultra reportedly starts with 18-core RTX Spark and 24GB unified memory

Detailed specifications for the upcoming Surface Laptop Ultra have reportedly surfaced. According to a report from Windows Central, the device will leverage the NVIDIA RTX Spark platform and offer significant capabilities for running local AI models, though entry-level specs may fall short of Microsoft's lofty ambitions.

CPU and GPU Configurations

The leak outlines two primary hardware tiers. The base configuration is expected to feature an 18-core CPU paired with a 5,120-core "Blackwell" GPU, offering either 24GB or 32GB of unified memory. For power users, a higher-tier version is rumored to include a 20-core CPU and 6,144 CUDA cores, with memory options scaling from 32GB up to a massive 128GB.

This unified memory architecture is designed to optimize data transfer between the processor and graphics, a crucial factor for high-performance AI workloads and complex computational tasks.

The 24GB Paradox: Can it truly run large AI models?

Microsoft is expected to market the Surface Laptop Ultra as a machine capable of running AI models with over 120 billion parameters locally. However, there is a significant technical hurdle for the base model. A 120B parameter model requires approximately 60GB of memory just to hold the weights at 4-bit quantization, even before accounting for the overhead required for active processing. Consequently, the 24GB configuration appears insufficient for the very AI workloads Microsoft intends to promote, leaving that capability to the higher-memory variants.

Display and Build Details

Beyond the silicon, the report provides a glimpse into the hardware's physical profile. The device is expected to sport a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with up to 2,000 nits of HDR brightness and a pixel density of 262 PPI. The chassis is slated to be remarkably thin, measuring under 18 mm, with a weight of approximately 2.04 kg. Connectivity remains comprehensive, featuring three USB-C ports, one USB-A, HDMI, a full-size SD card reader, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Notably, Microsoft is said to claim a 99.6% performance retention rate when operating on battery power. While the official pricing remains undisclosed, the high-end specifications suggest a premium positioning in the market.
