Supermicro fires staff over $2.5B AI chip smuggling scandal

Supermicro fired several employees after an investigation revealed a massive scheme involving the smuggling of $2.5 billion worth of AI chips to China, though the company insists senior management was unaware of the illicit transactions.

Taiwanese authorities raided Supermicro facilities and two supply-chain partners in connection with the scandal, leading to three arrests. The investigation uncovered that high-value Nvidia GPUs were being diverted to Chinese buyers through unauthorized channels, bypassing export controls designed to limit advanced AI technology access.

The company stated it assisted Taiwanese officials in the bust and emphasized that its leadership had no knowledge of the specific smuggling operations. However, the scale of the operation—valued at billions of dollars—raises serious questions about internal oversight within the server manufacturer's global supply chain.
