Supercell to acquire Metacore by end of September

Supercell is expected to complete its acquisition of Metacore, the developer behind Merge Mansion, by the end of September 2026. Once the deal closes, Merge Mansion will officially join Supercell's portfolio of live games, marking a significant consolidation in the mobile puzzle and merge genre.

The acquisition follows a period of restructuring at Metacore, which began in May 2026. At that time, the studio initiated change negotiations in Finland, considering the reduction of up to 160 roles, while also investigating operational changes in Germany and Sweden. These moves were driven by the need to "better align with the core business, improve efficiency of operations, and respond to an increasingly competitive market environment," according to statements made by Metacore in May.

Merge Mansion, launched in 2020, has seen its growth plateau in recent years. Despite efforts to expand globally with new investments, the studio faced intensifying competition in the "merge 2" category, a niche it helped pioneer. Metacore CEO Mika Tammenkoski described the situation in May as involving "very difficult discussions," noting that the organization had built growth ambitions that did not materialize as expected.

With the acquisition now nearing completion, Supercell and Metacore are already collaborating on the transition plan for Merge Mansion. Tammenkoski expressed optimism about the partnership, stating that Supercell's expertise in operating and growing global live games provides a strong foundation for the long-term success of Merge Mansion, its team, and its players.

This deal fits into a broader pattern of activity by Supercell, which operates under the umbrella of Tencent. Over the past few years, Supercell has focused on acquiring studios and taking majority stakes in other companies. In 2022, the company also made difficult decisions to end development on two of its own projects, Clash Quest and Everdale, signaling a shift toward a more focused portfolio strategy.

The specific financial terms of the Metacore acquisition have not been disclosed. The move is seen as a strategic response to market pressures in the mobile gaming sector, where major players are increasingly consolidating assets to maintain competitiveness and operational efficiency.
