Super Flower's new GPU power protection dongle costs $38 but is currently bundled only
Super Flower has introduced its new GPU power monitoring accessory: the VGA 12+4PIN OCP Dongle. This specialized dongle is designed to monitor the status of 12V-2×6 connectors, detecting current anomalies and uneven power distribution. The device can trigger a protection mechanism to prevent hardware damage when critical power conditions are met.
Monitoring and protection mechanisms
The dongle's primary function is to monitor current across individual 12V lines. If the current on a single line reaches between 9.5A and 12A, or if the difference between any two 12V lines exceeds 6A, the device issues a warning. This is signaled via orange ARGB lighting and an audible buzzer. To prevent false alarms, these conditions must persist for 10 seconds before the warning is triggered.
For more severe issues, such as current exceeding 12A, the device enters a critical warning state: the indicator flashes red and the buzzer sounds continuously. After 180 seconds of this state and an additional 15 seconds of solid red light, the VGA Black Screen Protection is activated. This mechanism cuts the video signal to protect the system from potential electrical hazards. Once triggered, the protection remains active, and Super Flower recommends shutting down the PC to inspect the connections before restarting.
Pricing and availability
The official Super Flower website lists the accessory at NT$1,190 (approximately $38). However, it is not currently available for individual purchase. According to an announcement on October 19, the dongle is being offered as a limited promotional gift with the new LEADEX VIII PLATINUM PRO PREMIUM power supply series (available in 850W, 1000W, and 1200W ATX 3.1 configurations). It remains unconfirmed whether the dongle will be released for standalone sale or made available in international markets.
This product enters a niche occupied by other power monitoring solutions, such as Cooler Master's GPU Shield Adapter, which retails for around $50 and offers similar per-pin current monitoring and audible alerts.
