Sony reportedly plotting to revive classic PlayStation games, starting with Ape Escape
Sony is reportedly looking to revive a selection of its long-dormant PlayStation classics by partnering with smaller third-party developers. According to recent reports, a new Ape Escape title might be the first to make a comeback.
The rumor surfaced during The Jeff Gerstmann podcast, where it was suggested that an external studio is working on the project. The developer in question is reportedly Evening Star—the independent team behind the acclaimed Sonic Mania and Penny's Big Breakaway. While the game is reportedly in development, it is not expected to be released anytime soon.
This move aligns with a strategy Sony has previously used, such as when Bandai Namco handled the development of Everybody's Golf: Hot Shots. It appears the console maker is keen to leverage outside expertise to breathe new life into its legacy IP rather than relying solely on internal studios like Team Asobi.
The Ape Escape series was a staple of the PS1 and PS2 eras, known for its unique 3D platforming mechanics. However, the franchise has been largely quiet since the release of Ape Escape 3 in 2005, leaving fans eager for a modern revival.
