Subscription Merger: Skydance Plans to Combine HBO Max and Paramount+
With the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery by Skydance now complete, the newly formed entity is moving forward with its consolidation plans. A major step in this process will be the merger of the HBO Max and Paramount+ streaming services into a unified platform.
While a specific timeline for the integration has not yet been announced, and details regarding the new service name and pricing remain unavailable, Skydance has confirmed its intention to continue licensing content to other streaming providers. The company has also highlighted technology as a core focus, promising increased innovation for customers, though specific technical roadmap details have not been provided.
For subscribers, the merger promises a significantly expanded content library within a single subscription. Based on current availability, the combined catalog would include:
- HBO Max: 676 movies and 627 series;
- Paramount+: 438 movies and 307 series;
- Total: 1,114 movies and 934 series.
In comparison, market leader Netflix maintains a substantial lead with 5,309 movies and 3,166 series available.
Regarding subscriber metrics, HBO Max reported over 140 million global subscribers in May 2026. Paramount+ reported approximately 81.6 million paying customers in August 2026. Notably, Warner Bros. has ceased publishing current subscriber data, following the trend set by Netflix.
From a technical standpoint, while Paramount+ has had a longer established presence in the German market, HBO Max (which launched in Germany in January 2026) is considered technically superior, whereas Paramount+ has faced previous issues with platform stability and technical glitches.
