Silent Hill: Townfall — how first-person changes the horror formula

The Silent Hill franchise has been evolving, expanding its scope beyond the iconic foggy American town. In Silent Hill: Townfall, the series takes a significant step by shifting from the traditional third-person perspective to a first-person viewpoint. While glimpses of this perspective appeared in Silent Hill 4: The Room and Silent Hill: The Short Message, Townfall marks the first time players will experience a full Silent Hill journey through the eyes of the protagonist.

The shift to first-person in Silent Hill: Townfall is designed to heighten claustrophobia. Utilizing a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the game provides a cinematic feel while realistically restricting the player's field of view. This makes the environment feel more oppressive, as threats can emerge from the sides or from behind, forcing players to rely heavily on auditory cues and constant environmental awareness.

A key mechanical change is the introduction of the CRTV, a handheld device that replaces the series' traditional radio static. By tuning into different frequencies, players can visually locate nearby enemies on the device's screen. Holding the CRTV up (via L1) allows players to monitor the device while moving, though it limits their situational awareness. The DualSense controller will also provide haptic pulses when enemies approach.

Combat and stealth mechanics have been adapted for this intimate perspective. Melee combat is described as harrowing, with monsters lunging at the player's face, requiring quick reactions and the use of makeshift objects for blocking. When direct confrontation isn't viable, stealth becomes essential. Players can hide behind objects like fences or parked cars using Circle, or use R1 to lean around corners and peek from cover to scout enemy positions.

This perspective creates a constant tension between interaction and survival. Simple tasks, such as checking a map (via Triangle), reading emails, or searching through drawers for clues, leave the player vulnerable to lurking creatures. The game also aims to deepen the connection to the protagonist, Simon Ordell; rather than relying solely on spoken dialogue, the game will use on-screen text to convey his internal monologue, offering a glimpse into his psyche during unsettling moments.

Silent Hill: Townfall is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on September 24.
