Showa American Story: A Wild Mix of Japanese Aesthetics and Post-Apocalypse
At G-Fusion Game Fest 2026, NEKCOM Entertainment showcased gameplay for their upcoming title Showa American Story. The presentation suggests the game is far more eccentric and absurd than a standard zombie survival title.
The game is set in an alternate timeline known as the 66th year of the Showa era. In this reality, Japan's immense economic power has allowed it to purchase much of the United States, resulting in a cultural fusion called "Showa America." This is reflected in the world's design, featuring the Statue of Liberty in a kimono and Japanese lanterns hanging from the Golden Gate Bridge. However, a "Great Calamity" has collapsed civilization, turning most of humanity into zombies.

Players follow Choko Chigusa on a road trip across America to find her sister, Aya. The journey takes players through locations like Neo Yokohama, where they will encounter gangs such as the "Yushi-dan" and other survivors.

The combat system focuses on a mix of melee and ranged attacks. A key mechanic is the "Rage Gauge" (HG), which accumulates through combat and can be spent on powerful weapon techniques or ultimate abilities. Additionally, a stamina (ST) system is in place; as stamina depletes, the character's defensive capabilities decrease, making them more vulnerable to damage.

Beyond combat, the game features survival and growth elements. Players can rest at locations like the G-EX Guren Express camper, where they can eat, train, or read manga to improve their character's stats. The developers emphasize a heavy dose of dark humor and absurdism throughout the experience.

Showa American Story is scheduled for release in 2026 on PC, PS5, and PS4. The game will feature full Japanese voice acting.
