Shigeru Miyamoto to receive Japan's Order of Culture award
Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto is set to become the first game developer to be honored with Japan's Order of Culture. The news was reported by GameWatch.
Miyamoto is among eight recipients selected by the Japanese government in the Media Arts (Gaming) category. The award will be presented in person by the Emperor of Japan during a ceremony on Culture Day, scheduled for November 3, 2026.
Established in 1937, the Order of Culture recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Japanese culture in art, literature, science, and technology. The Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda creator previously received the Person of Cultural Merit award in 2019 for his role in elevating the Japanese gaming industry globally.
Regarding the honor, Miyamoto stated that the achievement is not the work of a single individual but the result of collaboration, noting that he accepts the award on behalf of his colleagues.
This recognition follows a similar milestone for the industry: last year, Quest creator Yuji Horii became the first game designer to receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
