SGBC: FPGA Console Targeting Game Boy Classics in 1080p

French electronics engineer Thomas Sanfourche is working on the SGBC, an FPGA-based console designed for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges. The device aims to output games in 1080p resolution using integer scaling, ensuring sharp pixel edges and original aspect ratios are preserved on modern displays.

By utilizing FPGA technology rather than software emulation, the SGBC seeks to replicate original hardware behavior with high precision. The console is built for owners of physical media, featuring a cartridge slot and the ability to copy ROMs directly to a microSD card. This feature allows users to create digital backups of their physical collection for use via the onboard menu.

Connectivity and Features

Control options include both USB-C and a native connector for SNES controllers, reminiscent of the Super Game Boy experience. Beyond standard gameplay, the device is intended to include a fast-forward mode to speed through repetitive sections. Additionally, Link Cable support is planned, which would enable multiplayer and data exchange with compatible handhelds when using the appropriate cables.

Development Status

The SGBC is currently in the development phase. While the hardware design—featuring a classic grey and burgundy aesthetic—is established, Sanfourche notes that full game compatibility, Link Cable functionality, and the final feature set are still being validated. Consequently, the exact release date and definitive list of supported features remain unconfirmed.
