Saros: How Nixxes and Housemarque Created the Overlords of Carcosa
The development of the epic boss encounters in Saros relied on a tight collaboration between two studios: Housemarque, which provided the creative vision, combat language, and signature bullet-hell DNA, and Nixxes, which handled encounter design, animation, lighting, and technical implementation. Developers recently shared insights into how these Overlords of Carcosa were brought to life.
According to Nixxes Game Director Micah Hrehovcsik and Housemarque Creative Director Gregory Louden, the bosses in Saros are fully staged encounters rather than mere high-health enemies. The process began with detailed briefings outlining gameplay goals, followed by rapid prototyping and iterative polishing by Nixxes under the final review of Housemarque.
The design of these encounters was guided by several core principles:
- Three-Phase Structure: Every boss encounter features three distinct phases, each altering the visual identity and gameplay feel.
- Combat Duration: A typical battle lasts between three and eight minutes (with Saros: Zenith offering a tighter, more arcade-like experience).
- Fair Challenge: The goal was to ensure players understand why they lost, encouraging a desire to retry rather than frustration at perceived unfairness.
The developers also detailed the specific roles of key bosses. The introductory Prophet serves as a tutorial for boss mechanics without stalling progression. Architect turns the battle into a fight for survival on a collapsing tower, making the grapple hook essential. The massive Shepherd brings spectacle to a stormy sea, using tentacles to shrink the arena and spawn unexpected attacks. The surreal Priestess utilizes illusions and platforming, while the final boss, King, focuses on pure skill, escalating from a controlled rhythm to unpredictable ferocity.
For players seeking a faster challenge, Saros: Zenith will introduce the Overlord Rush mode, allowing players to revisit these battles to climb the leaderboards.
