Samsung Hits Record Quarter: HBM4 and AI Memory Drive Growth
Samsung Electronics has announced record-breaking financial results for the third quarter of 2026. The primary driver behind this surge is the Device Solutions division, where the relentless demand for AI infrastructure—specifically HBM4, server DRAM, and enterprise-grade SSDs—is reshaping the semiconductor landscape.
The company reported total revenue of 195.3 trillion won and an operating profit of 107.4 trillion won. The semiconductor segment (Device Solutions) was the standout performer, generating 147.1 trillion won in revenue and 106.5 trillion won in operating profit. This represents a new quarterly record for the division, with revenue climbing 15% compared to the previous quarter. Notably, this growth is not fueled by a traditional PC market recovery, but by the massive expansion of data centers. Samsung highlighted a significant increase in HBM4 sales alongside robust demand for server-grade DRAM and SSDs.
The AI Impact on Consumer Hardware
This shift in demand is creating a notable market imbalance. As manufacturers prioritize high-margin AI products, capacity constraints are driving up prices across multiple memory segments. For the consumer market, this means that as long as production lines are optimized for AI-centric components, there is less incentive for manufacturers to expand capacity for price-sensitive consumer DRAM and SSDs. Samsung expects this trend to persist into Q4 2026, bolstered by the rollout of new CPU and GPU platforms that will require even more HBM and high-speed server DDR5.
Outlook for 2027
Looking ahead to 2027, Samsung anticipates that demand for AI infrastructure will continue to outpace supply. To secure this growth, the company intends to focus on long-term supply contracts, which could effectively tie up a substantial portion of available manufacturing capacity for years. The Foundry division is also reaping the benefits of the AI boom, reporting increased orders for 2-nm HPC products from hyperscalers and rising revenue from HBM-Base-Dies. The upcoming production start at the new Taylor, Texas facility is expected to provide additional momentum in 2027.
For hardware enthusiasts, the takeaway is clear: as long as the AI sector offers superior margins, the stabilization of consumer memory and SSD prices may remain elusive. The semiconductor market is undergoing a fundamental realignment toward AI infrastructure.
