Ryzen 7 9800X3D owner claims BIOS update fixed thermal throttling
A user has reported resolving thermal throttling issues on their AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D through a BIOS update. Despite using high-end cooling solutions, the CPU reportedly hit its 95°C limit until a motherboard firmware update was applied.
The Issue
Reddit user nathandrake84 shared their experience on the AMDHelp subreddit, stating that their Ryzen 7 9800X3D would immediately reach 95°C and begin thermal throttling under load. The user attempted to resolve the issue by testing two different 360mm AIO liquid coolers and multiple mounting configurations, but none prevented the overheating.
The fix came via a BIOS update for the MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi. While the previous firmware version was not specified, version 7E51v1A16 (released in October 2024) is known to include specific performance optimizations for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D.
Results and Context
Following the update, the CPU's operating temperature dropped to 86°C, staying comfortably below the 95°C throttling threshold. This change allowed the processor to maintain stable performance without sudden temperature spikes.
It is worth noting that this improvement could stem from a genuine firmware fix for power or voltage management, or it could be the result of resetting the system to optimized default settings during the update process, which might have corrected previous manual configuration errors. In independent testing environments across various motherboards, similar overheating issues with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D have not been observed, with benchmark temperatures reaching approximately 70°C.
This case highlights the importance of maintaining up-to-date BIOS versions, as firmware updates can provide critical optimizations for new hardware architectures beyond just security patches.
