Running at 80% power didn’t save this RTX 4090, even with the official adapter

The issue of melting 12VHPWR (16-pin) connectors on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 cards persists, even when users take precautions. A recent case reported by Uniko’s Hardware via Reddit highlights that even limiting power consumption to 80% and using an official Gigabyte adapter was not enough to prevent connector damage.

Power limiting failed to prevent damage

The owner reported experiencing random black screens while audio continued to play—a common early warning sign of power delivery issues. Upon inspection, visible damage was found around one of the contacts on the 16-pin adapter, along with a white mark inside the GPU-side connector. Fortunately, the damage was caught early, likely saving the graphics card itself from total failure.

Notably, the card was running with an 80% power limit, capping consumption at approximately 360W (down from the standard 450W target). This reduction is typically implemented to lower temperatures and increase system stability. For context, 360W is the typical power draw for the newer RTX 5080, a series that has been reported to be much less prone to these specific connector issues.

Technical setup and risks

The system is powered by a 2021 Corsair RM1000x, which lacks a native 16-pin connector. Consequently, the user relied on the official multi-8-pin-to-16-pin adapter provided with the Gigabyte card. While the PCIe 8-pin connections from the PSU appeared normal, the failure occurred at the adapter interface.

The owner is looking to replace the adapter with a Thermal Grizzly WireView cable to eliminate the need for multiple adapters. However, users should be cautious: swapping official cables for third-party alternatives can void warranties. For instance, PNY has stated they will not cover warranty claims if non-standard power cables are used in the system.
