Roman Sands Re:Build: a fiendish immersive sim drenched in vaporwave
Roman Sands Re:Build is an experience that defies easy classification. Developed by Arbitrary Metric, it is far more than just a polished version of the 2019 original; it is a frenetic, unclassifiable journey that challenges the player's mental resilience through two vastly different acts.
The game functions as a tonal whiplash. The first act is a fiendish immersive sim wrapped in a vaporwave and glitchcore aesthetic, while the second shifts into a slow, oppressive survival purgatory reminiscent of the aesthetics of Evangelion. Both acts explore the chaotic struggle of staying alive through service, sacrifice, and maintenance.
In the first act, you are an indentured servant on a sunbleached, cursed resort. Your days are spent in a repetitive cycle of performing menial tasks for four miserable residents—cleaning, fetching, and anticipating their every need. It is a masterclass in simulating the psychological grind of service work, where you find a strange, toxic rhythm in performing banal tasks for characters like the hedonistic Bunk or the manipulative Sylvia. This segment is punctuated by Myst-style puzzles that require logic and observation, all set to a driving drum-n-bass soundtrack.
The second act, however, strips away the vibrant colors. Set in a decaying, submerged research station, it trades social interaction for crushing isolation. The atmosphere is heavy and claustrophobic, featuring interfaces that pay homage to NERV computers. Here, the gameplay shifts to managing life-support systems and dealing with parasites, trading the frantic energy of the resort for a sense of inevitable, looming doom.
Roman Sands Re:Build is not for everyone. It is a marathon of masochism that demands patience and a willingness to endure existential despair. It is a punishing, yet profound, exploration of the rituals we use to maintain our reality and the cost of keeping life going.
