Questwatch: The Making of the Overwatch TTRPG

Following BlizzCon, the Overwatch team has shared a behind-the-scenes look at Questwatch, the unique tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) experience presented during the event. This ambitious project, which bridges the gap between Overwatch fans and tabletop enthusiasts, also serves as a fundraiser for Make-A-Wish® through a special online auction.

The narrative foundation for Questwatch was built upon the concept of returning to the Overland setting from Season 5, incorporating the newly revealed Watchpoint: Grímsvötn map. The story, pitched by Jude Stacey, was brought to life by renowned tabletop expert Matt Mercer.

The production involved a massive collaborative effort from various Blizzard Entertainment departments to create high-quality physical assets:

  • Mike Hardison handcrafted the Grimstone Keep map, drawing inspiration from upcoming in-game environments and featuring custom LED lighting to simulate glowing lava.
  • Justin McMillan designed the miniatures by iterating on base hero models and blending various skins to match their Questwatch counterparts.
  • Art Director Dion Rogers provided professional miniature painting, adding intricate details to the physical pieces.
  • Myrna Sayuri Kusano designed custom dice sets, specifically the Overwatch Hope and Talon Fear editions.
  • A custom leather GM Screen, designed by Mike Hayes and signed by Matt Mercer, features a new Questwatch logo created by Sadie Boyd.

The project's scope also included key art led by Nesskain, audio design by Brian Weers, and crowd participation elements organized by Jude Cross. Auction items, including game-used miniatures and unpainted sets, are available for bidding until Sunday the 20th.
