Publisher of Nintendo Life launches Steam Hype, a new PC gaming site

Hookshot, the publisher behind Nintendo Life, has announced the launch of Steam Hype, a new media outlet dedicated to the PC gaming landscape. The site aims to focus on "what's hot and what's next" on Valve's platform through human-led curation.

Steam Hype marks the fifth site in the Hookshot lineup, joining Nintendo Life, Push Square, Pure Xbox, and the retro-focused Time Extension. While IGN Entertainment (the parent company of GamesIndustry.biz) holds a minority stake in Hookshot, the firm maintains its independence, a factor the leadership cites as crucial for expansion during the current industry contraction.

The mission of Steam Hype is to cut through the "perpetual avalanche" of daily releases on Steam. Rather than merely repeating major AAA trailers, the editorial team intends to spotlight interesting titles, providing monthly playlists of worthy new games and weekly lists of notable updates. While the primary focus remains on Steam and Valve hardware, the site may occasionally cover titles on platforms like Itch.

Anthony Dickens, CEO of Hookshot, noted that the site is not looking to compete directly with established giants like PC Gamer or Rock Paper Shotgun. Instead, it aims to serve a niche for readers looking for discovery and a focus on indie titles. The project arrives at a time when many gaming media outlets are facing layoffs, but Dickens believes Hookshot's independence allows it to adapt and grow where others are shrinking.

The editorial team will be led by Hookshot co-founder and editorial director Damien McFerran, with Dominic Tarason heading the editorial staff. Noah McFerran will join as a junior staff writer. The site's business model will rely on advertising sales managed by IGN Entertainment, alongside a reader-funded supporter program that offers an ad-free experience.

To build its audience, Hookshot plans to leverage its existing social media following and cross-promote content across its established network of websites. The company aims to reach a break-even point within the first year, positioning Steam Hype as a vital starting point for players seeking their next gaming experience.
