Psychic Software announces The Lich Wars, a prequel to The Necromancer's Tale
Developer Psychic Software has officially announced The Lich Wars, a standalone prequel to their acclaimed RPG The Necromancer's Tale. The new title appears to expand upon the narrative foundations laid during the previous game's prologue.
Positioned as a partially voiced, branching storybook RPG, The Lich Wars casts players as a musketeer in an alternative 1700s setting. The narrative spans a 30-year career, following the protagonist through two major lich wars and various other conflicts. The story explores themes of technological anxiety, the ethics of warfare, and the tension between emerging science and dark magic.
The game's world is set in the alternative kingdom of Rulsthen, reminiscent of the areas around Venice, with travel extending across Western Europe during periods inspired by the Great Northern War and the War of the Spanish Succession. Visually, the game shifts focus toward hand-drawn illustrations and narrative text blocks, though it will retain some tabletop and map elements from its predecessor.
Mechanically, players can expect evolving character relationships, skill progression, and the possibility of character death. While the scope of the story is vast, the production appears more streamlined than The Necromancer's Tale, focusing on narrative depth through its unique art style. A release date has not yet been confirmed.
