Project Zeta studio aims to fix MOBA stagnation with fast-paced action

Nirvanana, the studio behind the upcoming action-focused MOBA Project ZETA, is challenging the genre's traditional pacing with a design philosophy built on constant intensity and immediate gratification. Speaking at Gamescom, CEO Namseok Kim explained that the game aims to eliminate long downtime and passive farming, replacing them with rapid-fire team battles and frequent objective rushes.

Unlike standard MOBAs that rely on three distinct lanes for extended laning phases, Project ZETA places four teams of four players into a single maze-like arena filled with NPC enemies. The map is designed to encourage constant movement rather than static positioning. Key objectives, known as prisms, only drop from large boss enemies, forcing teams to engage in direct PvP combat to secure them. This structure ensures that action happens almost immediately, with team fights breaking out within seconds of the match starting.

The game's intensity ramps up significantly as matches progress through distinct phases. The opening phase is relatively calm with only one or two PvE bosses on the map, but subsequent stages introduce more bosses and tighter rushes for objectives. Once a team secures prisms, they must rush to a single central location to cash them in, creating another high-stakes funnel point for combat.

CEO Namseok Kim compares the game's feel to a hairpin turn in Formula 1, noting that modern audiences crave short-form entertainment. "Everyone wants immediate gratification, immediate fun," Kim stated. He believes the genre has stagnated over the last decade and aims to pass the thrill of MOBAs down to a new generation, including his own daughter.

Mechanically, Project ZETA rewards aggression with unique revival and reset systems. When a squad lands the final blow on an enemy, their fallen allies revive instantly upon landing that kill. Similarly, wiping out an opposing team immediately resets all skill cooldowns for the victors. This design intentionally removes the frustration associated with "third-partying," where a third team descends on a tense fight between two others, allowing for chaotic, continuous action.

The studio previously attempted a battle royale MOBA but found that survival mechanics inevitably led to passive play as games dragged on. By stripping away the battle royale moveset and compressing the experience into a multi-team structure, Project ZETA seeks to bring the same seismic innovation seen in shooters like Valorant and PUBG back to the MOBA genre.

Project ZETA is set to release soon on PC via Steam. The preview was conducted at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.
