Flagship GeForce RTX 5090 owners might face unexpected hurdles when seeking warranty support. According to a Reddit user, PNY has reportedly rejected a warranty claim for a dead graphics card, blaming the use of a non-original power cable for connector melting.
The Claim and Support's Stance
Reddit user Melodic_Initial_1767 reported that their GeForce RTX 5090, purchased last September, failed last month. The inspection revealed that both ends of the 12VHPWR cable—at the card and the PSU side—were melted, rendering the card invisible to the system. In response to the warranty claim, PNY support allegedly stated that coverage only applies when using the PNY-approved power cable or adapter included in the box. According to the user, any damage caused by third-party cables or power supplies is the responsibility of those manufacturers, not PNY.
This stance is highly controversial. A review of PNY's installation guides shows only general instructions to use an appropriate power connector, without explicitly mandating the use of branded adapters to maintain warranty coverage. Given the ongoing tight supply of GeForce RTX 5090 units and market prices soaring well above MSRP, such undocumented restrictions could pose a significant reputational risk for the manufacturer.

One individual seeking clarification was told by a PNY support agent that using a new 12V-2x6 cable from a third-party PSU would not void the warranty. As PNY has yet to issue a formal statement clarifying whether this was an isolated support error or an official policy, GeForce RTX 5090 owners using PNY cards may want to stick to the bundled adapters to avoid potential disputes.
