PlayStation 5 Pro firmware update enables 'Enhanced PSSR' by default
A new system firmware update for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro automatically activates Enhanced PSSR, a feature previously requiring manual enablement.
The PlayStation 5 Pro has received another system software update that fundamentally changes how the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology operates. Previously, this image upscaling tool required manual activation by the user, but Sony now enables it by default. The update applies to both the standard PS5 and the high-end Pro model.
What changed in settings
Until recently, the Enhanced PSSR feature was available in the system menu but remained off out of the box. Sony warned that the algorithm might not work correctly with some titles, so users had to manually enable it and monitor stability.
The situation has changed following the release of the new firmware. According to Sony: "When you update your system software, this setting will be turned on automatically." Enhanced PSSR is now applied to all supported games, providing a sharper and clearer visual experience without user intervention.
Technical context
PSSR is a hardware-based upscaler powered by neural networks that allows the console to render games at a resolution lower than native (e.g., 1080p instead of 4K) and then artificially enhance image quality. The technology is positioned as an alternative to NVIDIA's DLSS but operates differently: PSSR processes the signal at the pixel level using spectral analysis, which theoretically should yield more natural colors and textures.
It is important to note that the feature is still in beta testing. This means the algorithm may be unstable or cause artifacts on some titles, although system performance remains unaffected.
Can it be disabled?
Yes, the toggle is still accessible in system settings, and users can forcibly disable the feature. However, according to developers, there are currently no real reasons to do so — Enhanced PSSR improves visual quality on supported titles without requiring additional resources from the console's CPU or GPU.
