Phantom Blade Zero: How boss weapons transform combat and exploration
New details from the PlayStation Blog shed light on the core gameplay of Phantom Blade Zero. Blending elements of Soulslikes, hack-and-slash, and action-adventure games, the title offers a unique approach to combat and exploration within its
The combat in Phantom Blade Zero is built on a dynamic balance between aggression and defense. Players must manage their Sha-Chi meter: blocking attacks depletes this resource, leaving the character vulnerable, while perfect parries and dodges instead drain the opponent's defenses. To quickly replenish Sha-Chi, players can swap between two equipped main weapons using the D-Pad. Once fully charged, the Sha-Chi Essence allows for a Power Surge attack, which interrupts enemy actions and deals massive damage.
A standout feature is the method of acquiring weaponry. Rather than finding swords in chests, players claim most weapons by defeating bosses, allowing them to master new fighting styles through direct experience. For instance, defeating Hua, Deadly Betrothed grants the Scarlet Wraithblade, which summons spider lilies to slow down enemies during combos. Other options include the dual-wielded White Serpent and Crimson Viper, which can be used individually or combined to perform sweeping, circular attacks around the character.

Exploration of the Wulin world is deeply integrated with character progression. Collecting Blue Memory Flowers scattered throughout the environment provides glimpses into the lore and increases the protagonist's maximum health. Additionally, certain paths are blocked by environmental barriers that can only be bypassed using specific Phantom Edge abilities earned from bosses, such as smashing through obstacles or using a grapple to reach high locations.
The narrative presents a dark and tragic setting. Players will encounter various foes with distinct motivations, such as Jing Ye, The Outlaw, who uses dirty tactics and a spiked shield, or the enigmatic Gold-Masked One, portrayed by martial arts legend Donnie Yen. Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5 on October 29.
