Path of Exile 2: Return of the Ancients League Start Guide — What You Need to Know
PoE 2 Patch 0.5 is the final major update before 1.0 release. It contains more new content than any previous Early Access patch.
Origins of Divinity completely changes the Atlas structure: you now choose your own progression branch.
Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 'Return of the Ancients' launched on May 29, 2026. This is the most expansive update since the game's Early Access launch. Here's what you need to know before starting the new league.
Runes of Aldur League: Basics
Runes of Aldur is a new challenge league with a temporary character. The league is available from the moment Patch 0.5 launched. The league mechanic revolves around a rune system: players collect and combine runes that affect character parameters and mechanics. League progress doesn't automatically migrate to standard — same as previous PoE leagues.
Two New Ascendancy Classes
Spirit Walker: specializes in spirit manipulation and absorption. Suited for DoT, aura, and resource management builds. The Ascendancy tree opens passives for enhancing spiritual zones and "essences."
Martial Artist: melee combat master. Unlocks combo strike chains and strike damage enhancements. Works well with blade and strike builds.
Rebuilt Atlas
Origins of Divinity is a complete Atlas overhaul. 300+ new nodes are divided into 6 new storyline branches. The structure has changed: you now choose which "line" to progress through, rather than unlocking the entire atlas linearly. 30 new map zones add content variety.
League Start Tips
- Don't rush straight to the Atlas — learn the Runes of Aldur league mechanics during the main campaign first.
- For first clears, a straightforward fast-clear build (Ranger or Mercenary) is recommended.
- New Ascendancies require adaptation to combo and absorption systems — study their passives before choosing.
- The rebuilt Atlas resets progress — account for this when planning your first sessions.
