OWC USB-C Quad HDMI 4K Display Adapter for M1–M3 Macs

OWC has released the USB-C Quad HDMI 4K Display Adapter, a peripheral that enables up to four external displays from a single USB port. The device is specifically noted for its compatibility with Macs equipped with "Apple" M1, M2, and M3 chips, which typically limit external display output to a single monitor without specialized hardware.

The adapter supports a maximum resolution of 4K (3,840×2,160) at 60Hz across its four HDMI outputs. It utilizes a DisplayLink chipset, which allows it to function across multiple operating systems and device types. According to the manufacturer, it is compatible with Macs, Windows PCs and tablets, and Chromebooks. For devices other than Chromebooks, users must install the DisplayLink driver or a dedicated application to enable the multi-monitor functionality.

A key technical feature is the ability to bypass the standard display limitations of Apple silicon. While Macs with M1, M2, and M3 chips generally restrict external display support to one monitor, the DisplayLink technology in this adapter allows for a four-screen setup. The source includes a demonstration of this capability on a MacBook Pro equipped with an M2 chip.

The device also includes USB Power Delivery (USB PD) pass-through. When connected to a compatible AC adapter, it can supply up to 90W of power to the connected computer, tablet, smartphone, or other USB devices. However, this power delivery feature is not supported when devices are connected via the Type-A ports.

Several limitations are explicitly noted. The adapter does not support HDR or HDCP 2.2. The physical dimensions of the unit are 108×88×16mm, and it weighs 184g. It comes with a cable approximately 300mm in length and includes a USB Type-C to USB Type-A adapter connector.

Software requirements include macOS 14 or later, Windows 11 or later, and the latest version of Chrome OS. The product is available for purchase in Japan for 33,000 yen, with sales handled by Amulet.
