OpenAI DevDay: dots Agents, GPT-6.1 Sol, and a $500 Subscription
At its DevDay event, OpenAI introduced over 20 updates focused on agentic workflows and developer tools. The highlights included the new dots agents, the GPT-6.1 Sol model, and a high-speed Ultrafast mode available through a new premium subscription.
dots Agents
The centerpiece of the presentation was the dots agents, powered by the GPT-6 Astra model. Unlike standard chatbots, these agents operate within their own cloud-based computing environment and browser, allowing them to work on tasks continuously in the background without taxing the user's local machine. dots can connect with over 4,000 applications, including Slack and Microsoft Teams, and are accessible via web, desktop, and mobile ChatGPT apps. These agents can manage multiple projects simultaneously, ask follow-up questions, and report progress. To ensure control, actions with real-world consequences, such as sending messages or information, require explicit human approval.
To maintain privacy, OpenAI utilizes an isolated cloud environment; the user's computer remains disconnected unless access is explicitly granted. A proactive background research feature is also included, which uses read-only tools and cannot modify app content, send messages, or control the browser/computer directly. dots will initially roll out to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets, while enterprise customers can opt into a beta version.
GPT-6.1 Sol and Developer Tools
Following closely on the heels of GPT-6 Sol, OpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Sol. This model is positioned between the standard Sol and the larger GPT-6 Astra. According to OpenAI's own benchmarks, GPT-6.1 Sol approaches Astra-level performance in programming and professional document tasks while costing significantly less—roughly one-fifth to one-seventh the price. In the OSWorld 2.0 benchmark, the model trails Astra by only 2.1 percentage points while requiring much lower reasoning effort.
Developer capabilities are also expanding via the Agents-API, which now includes computer control and multi-agent orchestration. Codex can now utilize cloud-based development environments and be controlled via voice. Additionally, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Space, a collaborative workspace where teams, ChatGPT, and agents can work together on shared documents and presentations.
Ultrafast Mode and New Pricing
For users requiring maximum speed, OpenAI is introducing Ultrafast mode. When enabled, the model can operate up to eight times faster than GPT-6 Astra. This feature is available via API, as well as in ChatGPT Work and Codex through a new Pro tier priced at $500 per month, which also offers the highest usage limits.
