OC tool can unlock higher RTX 5090 XBAR clocks, users report gains of up to 142 MHz
A new utility called melonVolt gives GeForce RTX 5090 users direct control over the MSVDD voltage offset. Tests show crossbar (XBAR) clock gains of up to 142 MHz, but NVIDIA warns about stability risks.
Users report that a new tool called melonVolt, developed by Overclock.net user Fmab., allows manual adjustment of the MSVDD voltage on NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 cards. This enables raising the crossbar (XBAR) clock frequency by up to 142 MHz above stock values, though the tool comes with a clear warning: "use it at your own risk".
How it works
The utility uses NVIDIA's NVAPI interface to adjust the MSVDD voltage offset in 5 mV steps. By default, driver 572.60 sets a −50 mV offset after black-screen issues appeared following the RTX 5090 launch. MelonVolt removes this restriction and allows manual voltage tuning.
Test results
GIGABYTE AORUS Xtreme WB: XBAR clock increased from 2625 to 2767 MHz (+142 MHz) at 1.095 V MSVDD.
ASUS ROG Astral LC: growth from 2670 to 2760 MHz (+90 MHz) with a +50 mV setting.
MSI RTX 5090 Lightning: frequency increased from 2655 to 2747 MHz (+92 MHz).
Other tested models include ASUS ROG Astral, ASUS Matrix, ASUS TUF and GALAX RTX 5090D HOF XOC. Results vary depending on BIOS version, cooling solution and specific card.
Stability warning
NVIDIA lowered MSVDD to −50 mV specifically due to black-screen incidents after the RTX 5090 launch. Users note that too high voltage may bring back this issue. MelonVolt gives enthusiasts the option to manually tune this margin, but does not guarantee stability on all cards.
The editorial reminds: this is an overclocking tool, not a replacement for factory settings. Gaming performance depends on many factors — cooling, power delivery and chip quality. If you are not ready to risk system stability, it's better to stick with stock settings.
