NVIDIA reportedly preparing GeForce RTX 5080 with 24 GB: January 2027 release rumored
As the availability of flagship GPUs fluctuates and prices climb, NVIDIA is reportedly considering a significant update to the GeForce RTX 5080 lineup, potentially introducing a 24 GB VRAM variant.
According to posts from ChannelGate (via VideoCardz) reported by Hardwareluxx, NVIDIA is planning to phase out the current GeForce RTX 5080 in favor of a new version equipped with 24 GB of GDDR7 memory. This move, similar to the rumored adjustments for the RTX 5090D v2, could see an announcement as early as December, with a market release expected in January 2027.
This strategic shift appears to be a response to the current market landscape. The GeForce RTX 5090 has become increasingly difficult to find at MSRP, with prices exceeding €7,000 in some markets. Simultaneously, the standard GeForce RTX 5080 has seen a price surge over the last month, with entry-level models now reaching approximately €1,800.
Technical Expectations and Market Role
The 24 GB variant is expected to serve as a primary flagship model for the Chinese market, where specific regulatory constraints often dictate hardware configurations. While the core architecture and CUDA core count are expected to remain identical to the current RTX 5080, the 50% increase in VRAM capacity will significantly alter its performance profile in memory-intensive tasks.
However, the increased memory capacity will likely come with a higher price tag, making it unlikely to sit at the same price point as the current 16 GB model. It remains to be seen whether this rollout will be limited to specific regions or if it will become a global standard. For now, these details remain unconfirmed by NVIDIA and are based on reports from board partners.
