NVIDIA CEO may be target of spy plot via Chinese intelligence asset
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang may have been the target of a spy operation involving a Chinese intelligence asset, according to reports. U.S. intelligence officials are reportedly concerned that an executive at Megaspeed, a Singapore-based AI firm and NVIDIA cloud partner, has been passing information to Beijing while the company is under investigation for allegedly smuggling restricted AI chips to China.
The Investigation into Megaspeed
The suspect, identified as Alice Huang (also known as Huang Le), serves as the managing director of Megaspeed. The firm came under scrutiny after a U.S. Commerce Department visit to its data center in Malaysia revealed NVIDIA equipment still in its original packaging, raising suspicions of illegal re-exportation. The company is accused of facilitating the smuggling of approximately $2 billion worth of NVIDIA chips to China last year.
According to The New York Times, U.S. intelligence has been aware of Huang's activities for over a year and has briefed Donald Trump on the situation. However, reports suggest that no significant action was taken at the time, reportedly to avoid impacting NVIDIA's sales or escalating tensions with China.
Business Ties and Official Responses
The investigation highlights the close professional relationship between Alice Huang and Jensen Huang, with the two having been seen together at high-profile events like Computex 2024. In response to these allegations, NVIDIA stated that meetings between the CEO and regional cloud customers are standard business practice and do not involve the disclosure of sensitive trade secrets or national security information.
While the Chinese embassy in Washington has dismissed the claims as "groundless smears," U.S. officials remain concerned about foreign intelligence targeting high-profile American tech executives. NVIDIA maintains that it works closely with the U.S. government to monitor and act upon any entities or individuals identified as threats to American industry.
