Noctua commits to supporting new CPU sockets with mounting kits, even on 20-year-old coolers
Noctua confirms it will continue producing mounting kits for legacy coolers like the NH-U12 and NH-U9, ensuring compatibility with modern sockets as long as mechanical parameters allow.
Noctua has officially confirmed a long-term strategy to provide mounting kits for its CPU coolers, extending support even to legacy models from 2005. The company promises that enthusiasts can upgrade their old heatsinks to fit the latest Intel and AMD sockets without replacing the entire cooling solution.
According to Jakob Dellinger, Chief Product Officer at Noctua, the company plans to continue producing new socket mounting kits for its existing coolers. This commitment applies to very old models like the NH-U12 and NH-U9, which were originally designed for Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 processors back in 2005. Despite their age, these heatsinks can still be adapted to fit modern platforms such as AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851.
Dellinger explained that this initiative is driven by strong customer loyalty rather than just business necessity. He noted that many enthusiasts enjoy keeping their original coolers for decades while upgrading their CPUs. "We definitely plan to carry on supporting those old coolers, because it's just such a nice thing to have for customers," Dellinger stated. The company views this as a way to build trust and encourage long-term brand loyalty within the enthusiast community.
The engineering design of Noctua's heatsinks plays a crucial role in making this possible. The basic attachment setup on the base allows for compatibility with contemporary sockets as long as the mechanical parameters of modern CPUs do not change drastically. This means that even if you bought a Noctua cooler over two decades ago, it can likely still be used with new chips like Intel Nova Lake or AMD Zen 6, provided the thermal design power (TDP) rating is not exceeded.
