New York recommends $1M per MW investment for AI data centers

New York State officials have developed a framework recommending that operators of AI-focused data centers pay $1 million in community investment for every megawatt of power consumed. The proposal aims to help municipalities prepare for the long-term costs of hosting large-scale facilities.

The guidelines are designed to address potential financial burdens placed on local towns by massive energy demands. The framework advises local governments to plan for several specific contingencies, including:

  • infrastructure maintenance costs;
  • potential site abandonment;
  • other unforeseen expenses related to power grid expansion.

This initiative seeks to ensure that the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure does not leave local communities with the bill for upgrading and maintaining the electrical grid. If these recommendations are adopted into formal policy, they could significantly impact the economic feasibility of building new data centers within the state.
