Netflix US mobile viewership jumps 35% during GTA 6 extended preview
Data from Sensor Tower reveals a massive surge in US mobile viewership for Netflix during the extended preview of Grand Theft Auto 6. Hour-over-hour traffic jumped by 35%, while overall web traffic spiked 125% above average, causing temporary crashes on both the streaming platform and Twitch. The leak-driven hype has successfully converted consumer interest into re-engagement for lapsed viewers and new sign-ups.
The Grand Theft Auto 6 teaser, a 30-minute glimpse at the highly anticipated title, debuted on Netflix yesterday evening. While the site initially struggled under the strain of the traffic surge, it recovered quickly. The preview showcased the game's combat mechanics, voice acting, in-game world, and soundtrack, which features artists like Depeche Mode and Cliff Richard. Notably, the teaser highlighted the return of six-star wanted levels and introduced more challenging car-jacking sequences.
According to additional Sensor Tower data, pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 have reached 4.6 million units globally. The breakdown shows that 77% of these pre-orders are for the PlayStation 5 version, which is the platform used to capture the preview footage. This aligns with Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick's previous comments, describing the Netflix partnership as merely "one of the hors d'oeuvres" of a larger marketing campaign.
The release of the trailer coincided with ongoing security issues surrounding the game. A hacker group known as 'CyberLeek' began leaking gameplay footage, mechanics, and assets earlier in the week. In response, Rockstar Games issued a statement calling the leaks "heartbreaking" for their development team, noting that it was not how they intended for the community to see the game after years of development.

Take-Two Interactive has taken legal action against the source of the leaks. The company subpoenaed Microsoft, Discord, and X as part of its investigation into the origin of the stolen content. Meanwhile, Rockstar continues to work on sharing official details and gameplay with the community, aiming to provide everything fans want to know before the November 19 launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Analyst Abe Yousef from Sensor Tower noted that utilizing lexicon-stirring events tied to notable IP helps expand Netflix's appeal as an all-encompassing entertainment platform. By aligning itself with the launch of a highly anticipated console title, Netflix is effectively converting heightened consumer interest into re-engagement from lapsed viewers and sign-ups from non-subscribers.
