Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance: TGS 2026 Hands-on Preview

The massive expansion Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, slated for a 2027 release, promises to significantly expand the scope of the original title. At Tokyo Game Show 2026, we were given the opportunity to play a demo version ahead of the event. Set several years after the main game, the story moves to the Forbidden Lands, introducing new settlements like Madoi and the floating Kumoi Ruins. With the introduction of the new "Master Rank," hunting reaches a whole new level of intensity.

The Boost Bracelets: Redefining Combat Flow

The standout feature of Ascendance is the Boost Bracelets system. Rather than a new weapon type, these are arm-mounted gadgets that accumulate "Boost Gauge" through time or by dealing damage. Once you have accumulated up to three stocks, you can activate "Boost Actions," which significantly enhance current moves or add new capabilities.

The mechanic is focused on empowering "clash" and "counter" effects while increasing movement freedom. For instance, the Long Sword can perform a "Boosted Sheathe" leading into a powerful "Unrivaled Slash," while Dual Blades can now use "Skyward Evasion" for more aggressive maneuvering. Charge Blade and Switch Axe also received new combinations that allow for faster energy accumulation or more devastating attacks in Boost mode.

The Hunting Horn has seen particularly notable adjustments: hunters can now attack and play melodies simultaneously, making the class much more effective during active combat. Overall, the Boost Bracelets turn hunting into an even more dynamic and seamless process, where timing and energy management become decisive factors.

Facing the Legends

The demo offered three types of quests: for beginners (featuring Chata-kabura), for experienced players (with the new Alacerta), and a "revived monster" quest. The latter was a major highlight, as the official broadcast confirmed the legendary Teoscaron as the target.

Hunting Alacerta requires intense focus: this monster resembles a jet fighter, attacking at extremely high speeds. Since Alacerta hunts in packs, players must constantly watch their surroundings to avoid being blindsided by others in the group.

The encounter with Teoscaron is a true test of endurance. The monster utilizes its full arsenal: explosive dust, powerful flame gusts, and the signature "Supernova." Given the limited time and the high difficulty of Master Rank, even skilled hunters will find this a grueling challenge.

Verdict: Evolution or Transformation?

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance does more than just add content; it redefines the combat tempo. Thanks to the Boost Bracelets and the improved synergy with the Seikret—which can now swap weapons on the fly—the game feels faster and more modern. However, the high difficulty of the new quests and the heavy emphasis on mastering Boost mechanics might pose a challenge for those accustomed to a more measured pace. It is an ambitious expansion that promises to bring back the sense of discovery to the series, but it demands absolute concentration.
