More intensity and new monsters: Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance hands-on
At Tokyo Game Show 2026, a first look at the massive expansion Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance was revealed. Scheduled for a 2027 release, the title promises to introduce a new storyline, new areas, additional monsters, and the Master Rank mode. A hands-on demo provided a glimpse into the evolving combat through the new Boost Action mechanic and encounters with formidable new foes.
The standout feature of Ascendance is the Boost Action system. By activating the Boost Bracer, hunters can unleash weapon-specific attacks and empower certain moves for a limited duration. This mechanic is designed to maintain combat momentum, allowing players to trigger boosted actions mid-combo. The Boost gauge builds up through successful strikes, and strategically using Focus Strike to destroy monster wounds can recharge the gauge, enabling high-level tactical play to sustain offensive pressure.
The demo also showcased the Skybound Eyrie, a breathtaking area filled with floating islands where players can use Seikret to glide between landmasses. The hunt featured Araketa, a monster that operates in packs. The gameplay highlighted the terrifying coordination of these creatures, as the alpha can command the pack to perform synchronized, high-speed diving attacks. Players can also utilize the environment, such as hurling the rock-hard Gundoraja creatures to stagger their targets.
Finally, the battle against the Elder Dragon Teostra in the Oilwell Basin demonstrated entirely new attack patterns. Beyond its signature flame and blast attacks, Teostra features heavy-hitting slams that can be countered with precise timing using moves like the Switch Axe Offset Rising Slash. However, the environment itself poses a threat, as the thick oil mud in the basin can hinder movement, making it difficult to dodge Teostra's devastating area-of-effect attacks.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is set to launch on PS5 in 2027.
