Modders unlock experimental NVIDIA DLSS 5 hours after DLL discovery
NVIDIA's long-awaited DLSS 5 is finally getting its first unofficial look, but not from the tech giant itself. Just hours after a specific DLL file was discovered inside an early access build of NBA 2K27, modders from the RenoDX community managed to unlock experimental functionality in other titles. This rapid response highlights both the potential of the new technology and the current limitations of its implementation outside official channels.
The Discovery: A Hidden Runtime
Earlier today, VideoCardz reported that NBA 2K27's early access build contained a previously unseen library named nvngx_dlssnr.dll. Weighing in at 158 MB, this file is identified as NVIDIA DLSSNR version 310.8.0.0. The suffix 'nr' strongly suggests it houses the runtime for DLSS 5 Neural Rendering. Until now, there was no known way to utilize this library outside of NVIDIA's planned official integration.
Modders Strike Back: Control Gets Neural Rendering
The secret didn't last long. Members of the RenoDX modding community quickly adapted the new library to run in Control. The clearest demonstration applies Neural Rendering directly to Jesse's character model, allowing users to switch between several control styles. According to the modders, seven different styles are currently available, although the implementation is strictly limited to character models in this specific test.
Experimental Status and Performance Costs
It is crucial to treat this as an experimental implementation rather than a finished product. Several significant hurdles remain before it can be considered ready for prime time:
- Public Availability: The implementation has not yet been added to a public RenoDX release.
- HDR Limitations: HDR is not working correctly in the current build. Testing is focused on SDR while developers investigate how the new model expects its image data.

This suggests that while the technology works, the computational overhead of applying Neural Rendering this late in the rendering pipeline is currently prohibitive.

The discussion also references A Hat in Time receiving the experimental DLSS 5 treatment. This is particularly interesting because it is an older DirectX 9 game, rather than one of NVIDIA's announced DLSS 5 titles. It demonstrates the flexibility of the modding tools.
RenoDX developers also believe that Unreal Engine 5 games may be relatively easy targets if Neural Rendering can continue using data already exposed for DLSS and Ray Reconstruction.
