Modder reduces RTX 5090 12V-2x6 heat with dual 8-pin connector add-on
To avoid potential melting issues with the 12V-2x6 connector, a Redditor known as DallasGrave has modified an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 by adding supplementary 8-pin power connectors. This modification spreads the power demand across three lines, significantly reducing the thermal load on the primary 16-pin cable.
Technical Implementation
The mod involves soldering a custom PCB directly to the 12V-2x6 header contacts. This PCB then routes power to two additional 8-pin connectors, allowing the card to draw power from all three sources simultaneously. This approach is designed to distribute the RTX 5090's 575W TDP more effectively. According to DallasGrave, the card remains functional whether using only the original 12V-2x6 cable or the 12V-2x6 plus one 8-pin connector.
During a 48-hour stress test at a 550W load, the modification successfully kept the 16-pin cable temperature below 40°C. The modder reported that the current load on the 12V-2x6 cable dropped to just 3A, resulting in a 15°C reduction in operating temperature compared to the stock configuration.
Warranty and Practicality
While such hardware modifications typically void a manufacturer's warranty, DallasGrave claims to be in discussions with PNY to offer this mod under warranty. If successful, this could provide a practical solution for users concerned about the inherent risks of the standard 16-pin power delivery design used in high-power GeForce cards.
