Gaming Insider Claims Microsoft Canceled Halo Remakes and Spin-off
The future of the Halo franchise appears increasingly uncertain. Following recent restructuring within the Xbox division, the rights to the series moved from Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries) to Activision. According to an insider report, alongside Halo 7, remakes and a spin-off based on the novel "First Strike" were in the planning stages. It is claimed that Microsoft has halted all Halo Studios projects.
A Blow to Halo Studios' Roadmap
In a recent YouTube video, insider Rebs Gaming painted a grim picture of the restructuring at Halo Studios. The report suggests that the team led by studio head Pierre Hintze was working on Halo 7, remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3, and an interesting spin-off project. However, at the time of the layoffs—which involved 268 positions across Xbox Game Studios management and central functions—all these projects were still in the planning phase.
According to the insider, following the restructuring, only about 30 employees remain at Halo Studios, including Pierre Hintze. This remaining mix of developers, designers, and support staff is reportedly navigating a difficult transition. Furthermore, it is rumored that Microsoft leadership is unlikely to approve further projects for Halo Studios, and Activision is reportedly distancing itself from Pierre Hintze.
Details of the Alleged Canceled Titles
The insider highlighted several key projects that may have been sidelined:
- Halo 7: Unlike the controversial launch of Halo Infinite, this sequel was intended to feature a full campaign, PvE and PvP modes, and the Forge editor at launch. While staff reportedly presented an updated concept to Xbox management, including Booty, this month, the next major entry was still years away from release.
- Halo 2 and Halo 3 Remakes: Planned Unreal Engine 5 remakes of the classic titles.
- First Strike Spin-off: A smaller project based on Eric Nylund's 2003 novel, designed to bridge the narrative gap between Halo: Campaign Evolved and Halo 2. It was reportedly slated for a 2027 release, featuring approximately five campaign missions and a Firefight mode.
The Future of the Franchise
A new team at Activision is expected to take over the development of the next main Halo title, aiming to build the sci-fi shooter from the ground up. Meanwhile, the current Halo Studios team is reportedly attempting to produce smaller games using AI tools, while remakes might be outsourced to external studios. However, the likelihood of Xbox leadership greenlighting further Halo Studios projects remains low. As with all insider reports, these claims remain unconfirmed by official sources.
