Marvel’s Wolverine developers discuss capturing the essence of Logan
Players will soon be able to sink their claws into Marvel’s Wolverine when it arrives on PlayStation 5 on September 15. Ahead of the launch, the creative team—including creative director Marcus Smith, game director Mike Daly, senior art director Grant Hollis, senior animation director Brian Wyser, and narrative director Walt Williams—shared details on how they crafted the character's identity and world.
A primary goal for the developers was to differentiate this title from the Spider-Man series. While the Spider-Man games focus on large-scale open worlds, Wolverine is designed to be more intimate, grounded, and visceral. Marcus Smith explained that every design choice was intended to move away from the superheroic scale of Peter Parker and Miles Morales toward a more direct, tactile experience.
The combat and visual design center on Logan’s nature as a "tank." Grant Hollis noted that the character is intended to be messier and more destructive, with a heavy emphasis on blood, environmental destruction, and physical damage. The Battle Reborn suit design draws inspiration from real-world tactical gear, such as military outfits or motorcycle armor, to fit the game's lived-in universe. The color palette blends elements from the classic yellow-and-blue and brown-and-yellow comic book suits, but with a more practical, darker aesthetic.
The narrative focuses on the duality of Logan's personality—his ferocity and his humanity. Walt Williams highlighted that the team worked closely with actor Liam McIntyre to capture Logan's emotional range, from animalistic rage to a gentle soul. The story will explore themes of protecting the vulnerable, which serves as a catalyst for Logan's uncontrollable anger.
The game features reimagined relationships with iconic characters:
- Sabretooth is portrayed as a "big brother" figure with a tumultuous, often antagonistic, yet deeply personal bond with Logan;
- Mystique is depicted as a professional assassin who genuinely enjoys her work;
- Jean Grey serves as a moral compass, sharing a mutual obligation to protect the weak;
- The Reavers, hyper-lethal cyborg mercenaries, and The Hand, experts in ancient tactics, act as formidable foes capable of contending with Wolverine's power.
Animation plays a crucial role in distinguishing Logan's movement. Brian Wyser explained that the team focused on his "animalistic" nature, which includes a quadrupedal stride during running and traversal. His combat style is designed to reflect a man trained in various martial arts, functioning as a brawler capable of devastating multiple enemies at once.
