Machinarium 2 Revealed: A Steampunk Sequel 17 Years in the Making
After 17 years, Amanita Design has officially announced Machinarium 2. The premiere trailer was unveiled during The Triple-i Initiative showcase, marking the long-awaited return of the beloved puzzle adventure franchise.
The story picks up after the protagonists escape the city of Machinarium and crash-land in the barrens. While descending a cliff, the duo discovers a hidden valley inhabited by separate robot tribes, including those in the Elektrona monastery and the city of Oilton. As with the original, the narrative will rely on visual storytelling through gestures, symbols, and comic-style thought bubbles rather than readable text.
A major gameplay shift in this installment is the ability to freely switch between Josef and Berta at any time. Players must utilize the unique abilities of both robots to solve complex puzzles that cannot be cleared by a single character alone. The game's aesthetic remains faithful to its roots, featuring entirely hand-drawn background art inspired by Renaissance landscape paintings and old master drawings.
The soundtrack is composed by Tomáš Dvořák, known as Floex, who returned to score the original title. His work will blend the signature acoustic textures of the first game with new symphonic arrangements.
Machinarium 2 is confirmed for Windows and macOS via Steam. While mouse controls will be available for traditional adventure fans, the developers recommend using a gamepad to allow for direct movement of the robots without a cursor. A specific release date and additional platforms have yet to be announced.
