The tablet with the best sound system in years – Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 review

In an era where manufacturers compete on device thinness and camera megapixels, Lenovo has released a device that defies the status quo. The Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 is not just another slim gadget for on-the-go consumption. It is a specialized multimedia solution where audio quality takes center stage. Featuring nine speakers, including a dedicated subwoofer, and Dolby Atmos support, this tablet transforms into a portable audio powerhouse capable of rivaling dedicated speakers.

Design and Ergonomics: A Bet on Stability

The first thing you notice about the Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 is its physical presence. If you are looking for a device to read on a crowded subway, this isn't it. Weighing 775g and measuring nearly 23mm at its thickest point (due to the massive speaker module and stand), it is quite bulky. However, this design is intentional: the high-quality matte metal chassis features an improved round stand that allows for versatile positioning, including wall mounting, making it a versatile home media hub.

Despite its size, the build quality is excellent, feeling solid and premium in the hand. Notably, the display does not use PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) for brightness control, making it a safe choice for users sensitive to screen flickering.

Audio: A Game Changer

The acoustic system is the primary reason to consider this tablet. The setup includes 4 tweeters, 3 subwoofers, and 2 passive membranes. In our testing, the device achieved impressive loudness (up to 93.7 dB). While spectral analysis shows it still lacks the deep bass and extreme high-frequency detail found in high-end hi-fi systems, its overall sound delivery is vastly superior to almost any other tablet in its price bracket. It truly stands out as one of the best audio systems seen in a tablet in years.

Display and Performance: Solid Mid-Range

The screen is a 12.1-inch IPS display with a 2.5K resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It is significantly brighter than its predecessor, reaching 680 nits, which makes it usable even in bright environments. Color accuracy is high, and while the 22.8ms response time is excellent for multimedia, it might fall short for highly competitive professional gaming.

Under the hood, the MediaTek Dimensity 7400 provides enough power for smooth Android 16 navigation and everyday tasks. While it may struggle with the most demanding resource-intensive games, the device remains cool under load without noticeable thermal throttling. The inclusion of UFS 3.1 storage ensures snappy performance, and the microSD slot provides much-needed expandable storage.

Software and Camera Capabilities

There is a trade-off here. Although it ships with Android 16, Lenovo only promises two major Android version upgrades, meaning the software longevity is somewhat limited. As for the cameras, they are functional but unremarkable. The 13MP rear sensor and 8MP selfie camera produce decent images in good light, but they lose detail quickly when zooming or in low-light conditions.

Verdict

The Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2 is a niche device for users who prioritize multimedia immersion over extreme portability. If your primary goal is watching movies, listening to music, or using the tablet as a stationary media center, the exceptional sound and high-quality display justify its weight and bulk. However, for those requiring 5G connectivity, extreme portability, or long-term software support, this tablet may feel cumbersome and limited.
