Kojima moves to Xbox after PlayStation cancelled new stealth game
Sony has officially ended its partnership with Hideo Kojima's studio following a reported attempt to cancel their upcoming tactical espionage title, PHYSINT. The legendary director has since pivoted the project to Microsoft, marking a significant shift in the industry after a decade-long rift.
In a statement released today, Sony confirmed that it would no longer partner with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT, describing the title as a new tactical espionage series and essentially a spiritual successor to the iconic Metal Gear Solid franchise. While Sony's official communication downplayed the situation, suggesting future collaboration might still be possible, Hideo Kojima provided a much clearer narrative in his own statement.
Kojima revealed that in mid-June of this year, PlayStation Studios unexpectedly notified him of the project's cancellation. He emphasized that PHYSINT is a critical endeavor for both him personally and for Kojima Productions. Determined to keep the game alive, his team spent the last three months tirelessly searching for a new publishing partner.
The search concluded with Microsoft. Kojima stated that they found a shared vision for the future within Xbox and have decided to team up once again. This move follows an existing relationship between Microsoft and Kojima, who previously received funding from Xbox for an experimental horror project titled OD: Knock. Now, Xbox will also serve as the publisher for PHYSINT.
It remains unclear whether either OD: Knock or PHYSINT will see a release on PlayStation consoles. For Microsoft, this acquisition positions them well to deliver on single-player content for the next generation of hardware, an area where Sony has faced criticism in recent years. The departure marks the end of a long-standing feud between Konami and Kojima, which began roughly a decade ago when Sony helped bridge the gap by funding Death Stranding.
KitGuru Says: While PHYSINT was expected to be an instant hit with long-time fans of the stealth genre, its cancellation from PlayStation is a major victory for Xbox. This move signals that Microsoft is primed to lead the charge in high-profile single-player titles, addressing a gap that has been sorely lacking for Sony's platform over the past few years.
