iPhone Duo Passes 32,000 Folds, But Its Display Raises Questions

The entry of Apple into the foldable market with the $2,000 iPhone Duo is a major milestone for the category. However, early adopters may face significant maintenance costs and practical issues regarding the display's durability.

Hinge Durability and Stress Testing

Recent unofficial testing by YouTuber Joanna Stern has highlighted the resilience of the iPhone Duo's crease-free display hinge assembly. Using a custom 3D-printed rig, the hinge was subjected to 32,640 continuous folding cycles. Although the device does not close completely flat, testing showed no structural degradation or looseness. Force gauge measurements confirmed that the peak opening force remains consistent with factory specifications.

Notably, Apple has yet to publish official lifetime folding numbers. In contrast, Samsung demonstrated in 2025 that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 can exceed 500,000 folds, which translates to over 10 years of use if folded 100 times daily.

Ownership Risks and Display Characteristics

While the hinge appears robust, the device's mechanical complexity introduces high ownership risks. According to Apple's service pricing, out-of-warranty repairs for the iPhone Duo can exceed $1,500. Replacing the internal flexible display assembly alone costs nearly 75% of the device's MSRP. Damage to the titanium chassis or the multi-camera system could bring total repair costs close to the price of a new unit. Consequently, AppleCare+ (up to $199 for a two-year term) is nearly essential, as it reduces screen repairs to a $29 deductible and accidental damage replacements to $99.

Technical feedback also points to thermal and tactile concerns. Users have reported heat build-up in the titanium casing during intensive workloads or multi-camera use, leading to performance throttling. Additionally, footage from Weibo shows that the panel surface near the crease is notably soft, deforming under minimal finger pressure. This may be due to the use of variable-thickness panels, a technique reportedly employed by Apple to better conceal the display crease.
