Intel is rumored to be working on a new budget-friendly chip for the Raptor Lake Refresh lineup that could replace the Core i5-14600K. According to leaker Jaykihn on X, the upcoming processor might feature an increased number of performance cores (P-Cores), targeting better gaming and multi-threaded performance.

More P-Cores for Gaming Performance

The current Core i5-14600K is a popular choice due to its price point and dual-memory support, but it is limited to six P-Cores. The rumored replacement, referred to as the “8/8” chip, is expected to feature 8 P-Cores and 8 E-Cores (efficiency cores).

This shift could address a current gap in the lineup: to get eight P-Cores in the current generation, users must step up to the Core i5-14700K, which carries a significant price premium. By increasing the number of high-performance cores, Intel could offer a more competitive option for gamers who rely on P-Core throughput rather than a high count of E-Cores.

DDR4 Compatibility and Platform Longevity

Crucially, the new 16-core chip is expected to maintain support for both DDR4 and "DDR5" RAM. This flexibility is vital for users looking to upgrade existing systems—such as those built around the Core i5-12400F—without the need to purchase new memory. There are also rumors that new DDR4-specific motherboards might accompany the Raptor Lake Refresh launch to lower the barrier to entry.

While these details remain unconfirmed leaks, such a move would position Intel strongly in a market where DDR5 costs remain a consideration for budget-conscious builders. If the chip launches near the current $249 MSRP of the 14600K, it could become a highly attractive upgrade path.
