Intel Raptor Lake Refresh may bring new DDR4 motherboards
Intel reportedly plans to launch new DDR4 motherboards alongside its upcoming Raptor Lake Refresh CPU lineup, a move that could offer relief to users still holding onto older memory kits amidst rising prices.
Tech leaker Jaykihn has confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that the likelihood of seeing new DDR4 boards with Intel's next-generation processors is "high." This information comes as a direct response to community inquiries about whether the refresh would include support for legacy memory standards.
The strategic context for this announcement is clear: Intel's Raptor Lake architecture natively supports both DDR4 and DDR5 memory controllers. While most Z790-based boards launched with 14th-gen chips defaulted to DDR5-only, the current market reality—characterized by exorbitant DDR5 pricing—suggests Intel intends to leverage its hybrid compatibility as a bridge for budget-conscious enthusiasts.
Previous statements from Robert Hallock, VP and GM of Intel's enthusiast channel, align with this direction. Hallock described dual-memory support boards as a "bridge between worlds," reflecting the company's confidence in catering to users who have not yet made the jump to DDR5.
We have already seen examples of this approach, such as the ASRock H610M Combo II, which features one DDR4 slot alongside two DDR5 slots. If Intel proceeds with a new Raptor Refresh lineup, we can expect to see more motherboards utilizing B790 or Z790 chipsets that prioritize DDR4 support while integrating modern networking technologies.
Regarding the processors themselves, leaks indicate the new chips will carry Core 200 branding and continue using the LGA1700 socket. Notably, there appears to be no Core i9 variant in this refresh, and the lineup will maintain a hybrid architecture of P-Cores and E-Cores, distinct from the all-core design of the previous Bartlett Lake generation.
Intel has not yet officially announced the Raptor Lake Refresh, with an expected launch window in early 2027. Until then, enthusiasts looking to upgrade without replacing their existing DDR4 kits may find these upcoming options particularly relevant.
