Infinite ANANTA: A Zero-Combat Demo Highlights Deep World Interaction

NetEase Games and Naked Rain Studio have confirmed that Infinite ANANTA will launch globally on January 15, 2027. A hands-on session held in Tokyo on August 26, 2026, offered a glimpse into the game's new map, Chongxiao, and introduced the character Yinglong. Notably, the demo focused entirely on exploration and interaction, completely omitting combat to highlight the title's commitment to environmental detail and immersive world-building.

The urban open-world RPG has generated significant interest since its initial reveal, largely due to its high-quality action trailers and a monetization model that explicitly avoids character gacha. The announcement of the release date during the gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 event marked a concrete milestone for the project. While the date may seem distant, it is less than five months away, prompting a closer look at what the developers have achieved so far.

The media playtest took place at NetEase Games' Japanese office on the same day as the gamescom broadcast. The build provided was equivalent to the version available at the gamescom booth. Players were able to experience the introductory story for Yinglong, a new character, and explore the new map Chongxiao. It is important to note that this was a development build, and content may differ from the final product.

Localization and Controls

For the Japanese market, the presence of both Japanese subtitles and voice acting was confirmed. Given the planned release on PS5, controller support is robust. During the PC build session, both keyboard and mouse as well as controller inputs were tested. Both control schemes felt comfortable and responsive, with no significant friction reported.

Story and Character Dynamics

The narrative setup involves a world plagued by abnormal phenomena known as "Chaos." The protagonist, referred to as the "Captain," joins an organization dedicated to managing these events. Shortly after joining, the organization faces financial collapse, and the Captain inadvertently becomes an internet celebrity after defeating a Chaos entity causing traffic congestion. This leads to a storyline where the Captain, as an influencer, works to reunite scattered companions.

The game features a cast of playable characters, each with distinct roles and growth paths. For example, a character named Toffee, a rabbit-eared delivery driver, earns experience by delivering packages on a bike. This ensemble approach suggests a focus on diverse character perspectives rather than a single protagonist's journey.

In the specific scenario experienced, Yinglong is sleeping in a Zen temple when a mysterious group of robbers attacks. She wakes up, rescues her younger sister Jiping, and attempts to escape the temple. The character animations were varied, and the emotional expressions of both Yinglong and Jiping were rich and engaging. Both characters wear animal-eared hooded outfits, with Yinglong in a hoodie and Jiping in a hat. Yinglong's personality balances seriousness with humor, making her a compelling character for players who enjoy character-driven narratives.

Exploration and Interaction

Following the story segment, the session moved to free exploration in the new map Chongxiao. This area resembles a rural Chinese village with tea plantations, surrounded by lush greenery. The map features a pastoral atmosphere with a mix of natural and urban elements. Vehicles such as bikes and cars can be freely ridden, and even if submerged and lost, the game does not penalize the player for this action.

One of the most striking aspects of the demo was the complete absence of combat. The experience felt as if the developers were asserting that the game's fun can be conveyed without any fighting. Despite the lack of combat, the session did not feel boring. Instead, it was filled with a high level of detail and interactivity.

Special actions include the use of "telekinesis" to launch manhole covers at high speed. The purpose of this mechanic was unclear in the absence of enemies. Additionally, players could attack NPCs with melee actions. While vehicles would cause NPCs to dodge, melee attacks had hit detection and effects comparable to combat. In the test environment, NPCs would fall down, run away, or make phone calls after being hit, but further consequences such as arrest were not observed.

The map is filled with numerous interactive elements that reflect the daily lives of residents. Objects in the streets are designed with actions and content, creating a sense of a living world. For instance, there are activities related to tea roasting and other daily tasks. These elements are so numerous that they can distract players from simply exploring the map. The level of detail is described as "abnormal" in its quantity and variety.

Other features include a robust camera system with selfies and poses, a smartphone-style menu with various widgets, and a function to connect with friends by exchanging "phone numbers." The in-game time can be adjusted via the smartphone alarm, allowing players to switch between morning, noon, and evening at will. In one instance, a resident dropped a smartphone on the ground, which the player could pick up to read private chat messages, suggesting potential quest elements.

Comparison and Outlook

Many players are likely interested in how Infinite ANANTA differentiates itself from NTE: Neverness to Everness, which was released in April 2026. Both are next-generation urban open-world RPGs that aim to provide a realistic living experience beyond just story and combat. However, the two games take different approaches. While NTE focuses on game-like fun across the entire city, Infinite ANANTA aims for immersion in the reality of the world as a whole.

The producer, Ash, stated in an interview at Tokyo Game Show 2025 that "various parts of the city can be moved." The short playtest time meant not everything could be tried, but the variety of playful elements was evident. These interactive elements may not contribute directly to the core gameplay loop, but their presence creates a sense of immersion. The approach is not unique, but the sheer volume of content is exceptional.

As of now, the game remains a mystery. The playtest, the TGS 2025 session, and public videos have only scratched the surface. The protagonist, the "Captain," is a talkative, laid-back young man, and his childhood friend Shiye is a well-liked character. Yinglong's energetic personality is appealing, and the game features a cast of diverse characters.

The attention to detail is remarkable, with no obvious weaknesses in the individual elements observed. The remaining question is how these high-quality materials will be assembled into a cohesive game. The monetization model, which avoids character gacha, is a point of interest. Given the level of dedication to detail, it is likely that players will be inclined to purchase cosmetic items. The next major update is expected at Tokyo Game Show 2026, starting September 17, 2026. With the release date approaching, the anticipation for Infinite ANANTA continues to grow.
