Inateck NeoMagic Review: Turning an iPad into a Laptop Alternative
Modern tablets like the iPad are increasingly challenging laptops in their traditional domains, especially when paired with advanced peripherals. This article explores the Inateck NeoMagic keyboard case, which aims to bridge the gap between a tablet and a laptop by incorporating a trackpad and a dedicated display.

Hardware and Ergonomics: More Than Just a Case

The Inateck NeoMagic is a hybrid of a protective case and an external keyboard. The design uses a magnetic attachment to prop the tablet up, effectively turning it into a notebook-style setup. It also includes a dedicated slot for the Apple Pencil, catering to users who switch between typing and sketching.

The keyboard features a full-sized layout (the tested model was QWERTZ with 79 keys) and includes a dedicated function row for controlling volume and brightness. A standout feature is the small integrated display located in the upper right corner. Unlike many competitors, this screen provides essential information such as battery level, connection status, and whether Caps Lock is active.

Navigation is handled by a trackpad measuring approximately 11 x 6 cm. It supports multi-touch gestures—such as a three-finger swipe to switch between apps—making the iPadOS experience feel much closer to a traditional laptop environment.

Practical Experience: Weight and Typing Feel

While functional, the NeoMagic comes with trade-offs. The most notable is the weight; when paired with an iPad Pro 12.9", the total setup weighs around 1.55 kg, which is heavier than many standard 13-inch laptops. Ergonomically, the keys are somewhat stiff and lack the concave shaping found on premium laptop keyboards. Additionally, because the center of gravity shifts toward the display when unfolded, the setup can wobble slightly during intense typing sessions.

On the software side, the Inateck Origin app allows for customization. You can adjust the backlight (7 colors and 3 brightness levels) and assign specific actions to the dedicated Inateck key and four swipe gestures (e.g., for Siri or screenshots). However, the customization is limited, as you cannot assign these shortcuts to launch specific third-party applications.

Battery life is sufficient for several days of intensive use. While the manufacturer claims up to 100 hours of operation, this is only possible with the backlight turned off. The case charges via a USB-C port.

Verdict

The Inateck NeoMagic is a highly functional accessory for users seeking more than the standard Apple keyboard solutions. It successfully expands the iPad's utility with its trackpad and informative display, though it requires a compromise in terms of extra weight and a less refined typing experience.

Price and Availability: The MSRP is $199.99, but it is available for significantly less through retailers like Amazon or directly from Inateck. It comes in black and white.
