In Gaming History: Zelda Musou Released on Wii U

Released in 2014 by publisher Koei Tecmo Games, the game was a collaboration between two studios: Omega Force, known for the Musou series, and Team Ninja. The developers, who are fans of the Zelda universe, packed the project with numerous references to original games and parody moments that delighted fans immediately after launch.

The main feature of the project was preserving the signature "Musou feel." Players controlled Link, who single-handedly defeated hordes of enemies. The mechanics differed from classic Zelda adventures: there were no complex puzzles, only a flow of attacks and environmental destruction. For final bosses, a "Weak Point Smash" system was implemented, allowing critical damage after exhausting their health.

The interface was familiar to fans: health was displayed as hearts, and there was a magic gauge. The musical accompaniment and sound effects matched the original — from background music to the iconic sound of opening a chest, "Gomdare~".

Playable characters included not only Link but also Zelda, Impa, and Sheik. Heroes such as Darunia from Ocarina of Time or Midna from The Wind Waker were also available. Even the main villain, Ganondorf, was playable.

The game featured two main modes: the story-driven "Legend Mode" and the level-by-level progression "Adventure Mode." The level selection menu was stylized to resemble the interface of the first Zelda title. The game also supported online features, allowing players to request help from other users.

Over the years, the project received sequels: Zelda Musou Hyrule Warriors for 3DS (2016), followed by the expanded Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch (2018). The latest entry in the series was Zelda Musou Seisenki, released on Nintendo Switch 2 in November 2025, set in the era of the Ancient Wars from Tears of the Kingdom.
