iFixit releases teardown guides for Steam Machine

iFixit has released a series of detailed repair guides for the Steam Machine. These instructions walk users through the disassembly process of the Linux-based console, making it accessible even for beginners, though replacement parts are not yet available.

Available teardown guides

The iFixit overview page now features a dozen guides explaining how to remove various components. The instructions cover:

  • fans;
  • motherboards;
  • RAM;
  • SSDs;
  • heatsinks;
  • decorative covers and feet.

The disassembly process is relatively straightforward. Users need to remove four screws from the bottom and two from the back before prying the case open with a plastic tool. To reach internal modules, two additional screws on the fan must be loosened, allowing the entire internal assembly to be pulled from the chassis.

Repairability and Valve's strategy

While the guides are available, the actual replacement parts are currently missing from the iFixit catalog. However, this is likely a temporary situation. Valve has established a partnership with the site to sell original spare parts for the Steam Deck and the second-generation Steam Controller, including displays and batteries.

Given this existing cooperation, it is expected that Valve-specific components for the Steam Machine—excluding standard memory modules—will eventually appear in the iFixit store.
