How to fit a 'detour' into the plot: Baldur's Gate 3 Act Two Expansion modder on seamless storytelling
Modder SquallyDaBeanz has released the beta for Act Two Expansion, a custom campaign for Baldur's Gate 3. The mod adds an extra chapter to the main story, situated between the second and third acts, sending players through The Chionthar Wilds while the Absolute's army marches toward the city.
In an interview with Nexus Mods, SquallyDaBeanz explained that the goal was not to compete with the narrative climax of Act 2, such as the events at Moonrise. Instead, the mod aims to replicate the pacing of the first act, allowing players to explore large areas that, while not strictly critical to the main quest, still tie into the overall narrative. The developer noted that while the army is on the move, getting sidetracked feels natural within the RPG's logic, ensuring the sense of urgency ramps up before the transition into Act 3.
The development process also highlighted the technical hurdles of modding. Despite the official tools provided by Larian, SquallyDaBeanz mentioned that the community still faces toolkit bugs and limited documentation. This project required the developer to master entirely new skills, moving beyond previous experience in level design and set dressing (such as work on the Skywind project for Skyrim) to handle scripting, enemy behavior, new items, and cutscenes.
Currently, the project is moving toward a 1.0 release. The developer is working on an upcoming patch featuring bug fixes and balance changes based on community feedback. The mod is available on Nexus Mods in two versions: a full installation for a new playthrough or a quickstart version that teleports players directly to The Chionthar Wilds.
