From Disaster to Blockbuster: How DICE Rebuilt the Battlefield Franchise

Following the turbulent launch of Battlefield 2042, DICE faced a defining moment for the franchise. Instead of a decline, the series achieved a massive comeback: Battlefield 6 became the best-selling game of 2025 in the US, moving 7 million units in just its first three days. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Rebecka Coutaz, VP and GM for Battlefield Studios Europe, explained the radical changes in development and culture that made this recovery possible.

The issues surrounding Battlefield 2042 were multifaceted, ranging from technical instability to disappointing sales reported by EA CEO Andrew Wilson. Joining the studio in late 2021, Coutaz notes that the task was not merely about fixing bugs, but about fundamentally changing how the studio operates. To support a live-service model, DICE had to reorganize its entire workflow, implementing a bi-weekly patch cycle and fostering a culture of empowerment to gain the agility required for modern game maintenance.

A major strategic shift for Battlefield 6 was the move away from a single-studio development model. To handle the immense scope of multiplayer, single-player, and free-to-play experiences, the workload was distributed across four studios: DICE, Criterion, Motive Studios, and Ripple Effect. Unlike previous entries where secondary studios joined late in the process, these teams were integrated from the project's inception. Coutaz emphasizes that success relied on strict ownership and clear frameworks, allowing teams across different time zones to innovate within a unified vision.

The road to success has not been without obstacles. EA reportedly conducted layoffs within Battlefield Studios in March, and the free-to-play spin-off Battlefield Redsec has encountered mixed reception on Steam. Furthermore, the shooter landscape has evolved, with rising competition from studios like Arrowhead and Embark challenging the traditional dominance of the genre.

Despite these challenges, the focus remains on long-term engagement. Battlefield 6 is being treated as a platform, with a roadmap already outlining future content, including Naval Warfare planned for Season 4. According to Coutaz, the studio's goal is not to chase competitors but to listen to player feedback and leverage new technologies to ensure the franchise remains a staple in the industry.
